Joydeep Dutta is professor of functional materials at KTH since 2015 with research focus in the application of nanomaterials for energy and environmental mitigation. A career spanning a little over 30 years, with a year each in Japan and France, a decade in Switzerland (EPFL) and another decade at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand where he was Professor and vice president. Prior to moving to KTH he served as the Chair in Nanotechnology at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman for four years. Prof. Dutta is an award winning author (Choice award for Outstanding Academic title of 2010 from American Library Association).


In 2020 his research was chosen in the top 100 list 2020 of the Swedish Academy of Engineering. He is amongst the top 25 researcher (h-index wise) at KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Scopus.com), top 0.3% researcher (number of papers), 0.4% researcher (h-index) & 0.5% researcher (citations) in the world (Web of science) having graduated 11 Ph.D students (currently supervising 7 PhDs) and supervised over 50+ master’s thesis in his career.

  • Prof. Dutta has been in academia and in the industries alike. From 1997-2001 he worked in technical and managerial qualities in high technology industries in Switzerland before returning back to academia in 2002. In the last five years, he has spun off four start-ups, one of which has gone through private funding and started commercial sales.

  • With broad experience in academic and industrial research, and exposure to multiple technology developments, Prof. Dutta is ready to share knowledge and expertise. Professor Dutta has been working in Planetcare nexus of research encompassing visible light photocatalysis, electrocatalysis of waste water (with focus on degradation of produced water and hospital waste), desalination (both membrane and capacitive deionization), Green hydrogen production and biofouling. In this context he has national and international contacts through the research projects that he has carried out both with academia and the industry.
