Prof. Jiayin Yuan joined Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry, Stockholm University as a Wallenberg Academy Fellow (by Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, Sweden) in 2018 and was appointed as full professor in materials chemistry, after previous academic occupation in Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPIKG), Germany (2009-2016) and Clarkson University, USA (2017). He is currently the director of Stockholm Material Hub.
Prof. Yuan is an honored young chemist with the research focus on functional polymers and porous carbon materials, include:
a) Charged polymers, in particular poly(ionic liquid)s. This type of novel polymer materials is produced from ionic liquids, thus combining some properties and functions of ionic liquids with macromolecules. Typical innovations include functional polyelectrolytes, porous membrane, fibers and responsive materials for sensors.
b) Biopolymer-derived functional materials. Efforts are made on new methods and concepts on constructing functional materials entirely or partially from renewable biopolymers, with particular interest in biomaterial-derived soft actuators and sensors.
c) Porous carbon & polymer for energy, and catalytic application. Heteroatom-doped porous carbons with well-designed shapes like foams, fibers, and membranes are developed, with the intention of applications in electrodes or electrocatalysts in energy-related electrochemical processes like fuel cells, batteries, and supercapacitors.
Prof. Yuan has published 170+ peer-reviewed scientific articles with 10000+ citation, and he holds 2 patents for inventions as well. Besides Wallenberg Academy Fellowship, some other major awards include the career Award for young chemists ”Dozentenpreis” (Foundation of German Chemical Industry, Germany), career award for young polymer scientists “Hermann-Schnell Preis“ (German Chemical Society), and European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant Award. He is also Member of Young Academy of Europe, Member of the International Polymer Colloids Group, associate editor of the journal “Nano Select” and editorial board member of the journal “Applied Materials Today” and Wiley-VCH macromolecular series.
Prof. Yuan welcomes collaboration with SMEs in academia-industry knowledge transfer and access to research facilities, as well as industrial PhD or master students training.
